This would mean when we negotiate with employers we'd have far less leverage to bargain for a fair deal. In extreme cases, we could see employers locking out workers and bringing in strike-breaking labour to do their jobs until they give in.
Workers would have the option of accepting whatever terms the boss is offering, or effectively having no job at all.
This is another plank in the Government’s platform of undermining unions and taking away workers’ rights in order to cut our pay and reduce our conditions. So far the Government has committed to support the bill to first reading.
I appeared on 3 News last night to talk about the bill and what it means for all of us as union members. You can watch that footage here.
We will be campaigning strongly against this bill to try to knock it over, just as we are campaigning against the other employment law changes this Government is attempting to pass.
I urge you to get involved in the campaign by signing up here.
