‘Axe the tax' campaign to fight GST rise

26 February, 2010

Labour is launching its ‘Axe the Tax' bus tour against the government's proposed GST rise this Sunday at 10am at the Avondale Market in Auckland and union members have been invited to get involved.

The bus tour follows the government's announcement that it is seriously considering increasing GST to 15% in order to make tax cuts that will primarily benefit those on high incomes.

Labour argues that no one voted for an increase to GST - in fact John Key ruled out a GST increase before the election - and says tax changes should benefit everyone, not just a few at the top.

Phil Goff will launch the tour at the Avondale Market in Auckland at 10am on Sunday 28 February and has invited union members to come along and get involved.

For more information about the tour, including a full schedule of when it will be in your town, visit www.labour.org.nz/axethetax

When: 10am, Sunday 28 February

Where: Main entrance to Avondale Market (Racecourse), off Ash St.  The bus will be parked just inside the gate - you can't miss it!

Please wear: RED or your union gear

About the tour:

The MPs and activists on the bus will be meeting with community organisations, NGOs and unions whose members will be hardest hit by increasing GST to 15%. We want people to know that GST hike will be funding big tax cuts for the wealthy.

This is a whistle-stop tour taking in over 45 towns from Auckland to Dunedin over two weeks.
